DEWSBURY RAMS 32 WEST HULL 10
ALEXANDER FYNN, FLAIR Stadium, Sunday
CAELUM JORDAN marked his first appearance of the season with two tries as Dewsbury avoided a potential banana skin to move into round three, where they will visit Oldham.
Fellow winger Tom Delaney, signed from Wakefield, also crossed twice as last year’s National Conference League champions were overcome after putting up spirited resistance.
Centre Bailey O’Connor, recently recruited from Featherstone, went over, as did on-loan Bradford forward Jacob Bateman, who was later sinbinned.
Rams coach Paul March is renowned for his knowledge of the community game, so knew just how tough a test West Hull were likely to provide.
He retained the bulk of the side who won 20-12 at Hunslet in round one of the Championship, when O’Connor also claimed a try.
Liam Copland made way for former Castleford player Jordan, while forward Harvey Roberts was on the bench rather than Jack Briggs.
Dewsbury applied early pressure and claimed their opening try after six minutes, when O’Connor played an overhead pass to Jordan, who took two defenders with him as he powered over wide out, although Jacob Hookem couldn’t convert.
Four minutes later, West Hull were level after a clever low kick from Jack Sanderson ricocheted off Joe Summers and Eligh Wilkinson took advantage. However the winger was unable to slot the conversion which would have put the amateurs in front.
The visitors continued to apply pressure, but Dewsbury remained resolute in defence and regained the lead on 32 minutes.
Dan Coates sent Delaney down his wing, and while Kieran Masike attempted a last-ditch tackle, the try was scored, although it went unconverted.
But Dewsbury did stretch their advantage via a lofted kick from Hookem. An attempted catch by Sanderson was fumbled, then Jordan chased his own kick and claimed his second, with Hookem finally on target from the tee.
The scrum-half then kicked a penalty-goal on the stroke of half-time to make it 16-4.
As the second half began it was the visitors who struck first, nine minutes in, when from a low Sanderson kick, backrow Benn Arbon forced his way over, with Wilkinson adding the goal.
Dewsbury came close when Coates chased a Delaney kick but couldn’t get the key touch, but then George Senior fired the ball forward low and Delaney sprinted in for his second score on 56 minutes.
Hookem was off target with the conversion attempt, but did improved his team’s last two tries.
O’Connor notched after Jordan kicked over Wilkinson, then Bateman struck after O’Connor powered through the West Hull defence and played a sublime pass.
Four minutes from time, Bateman was yellow carded for a high tackle on Harry Hutchinson.
GAMESTAR: Dewsbury winger Caelum Jordan was lively and notched two tries.
GAMEBREAKER: Tom Delaney’s 56th-minute score gave the Championship side a ten-point advantage and took the wind out of spirited Wests’ sails.
