CRONULLA SHARKS 10 DOLPHINS 38
TOM SMITH, Ocean Protect Stadium, Saturday
SELWYN COBBO notched his first try in new colours as the Dolphins overcame the Sharks in the battle of the fins in Sydney.
Cronulla trailed by just six points deep into the second half, before Jamayne Isaako nailed a pair of penalty goals and his team-mates added three tries in the last six minutes including a maiden club four-pointer for ex-Bronco Cobbo.
The Sharks had won eight in a row on home turf but this shock loss spoiled that record and stand-off Braydon Trindall’s 100th NRL game.
Phins centre Jake Averillo bagged the first of his two tries in the 20th minute, before Nicho Hynes looped a perfect cut-out to Sam Stonestreet up the other end.
But Isaako finished an audacious Isaiya Katoa two-man cut-out in the right corner and a Herbie Farnworth bust sent Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow streaking away to make it 16-4 at the break.
Trindall barged over in his milestone game to set up a close finish.
But Isaako’s two penalties were pivotal – the first due to a trip by Blayke Brailey, and after the bunker turned down Stonestreet, the second resulting from a tackle on Farnworth in the air.
Then Averillo, Cobbo and Connelly Lemuelu went bang, bang, bang late to seal a stunning win.
