East Wales win Welsh Under 14 Origin

WALES UNDER 14 ORIGIN
EAST WALES 36 WEST WALES 22
IAN GOLDEN, Cardiff University Sports Park, Saturday

LED by enthusiastic captain Mason Lloyd, who scored two tries, and Sam Kings, who claimed a hat-trick, East fought hard for their win, with West in the game right up to the last ten minutes.

Koby Rogers gave West the lead in the ninth minute but East responded straight away after Shane Small scooped a grubber to cross from ten metres, Morgan Jones converting.

West regained the advantage on 15 minutes, Izak Aiono sending Lloyd Cokeley over, with Will Mordecai improving.

East replied when Lloyd dived in from dummy-half and Jones converted, but West went into the break with a 16-12 lead through a late try by Jude Thomas that Mordecai goaled.

The pendulum swung East’s way early in the second half when Kings dotted down, Jones’ conversion giving them an 18-16 lead.

Kings added his second – and East’s fourth – try from the first set after kick-off. Jones improved again to give East an eight-point lead.

West got back into the game when Aiono scored wide out after an excellent crossfield run and Mordecai’s kick went in off a post.

But East hit back through Lloyd, before Kings completed his hat-trick, Jones landing both goals to cement a 14-point win.
