Ex-NRL and Hull FC forward Kane Evans comes out as gay in emotional interview

FORMER Hull FC player Kane Evans has come out as gay in a powerful interview on Australian TV.

The powerhouse prop played more than 100 NRL games then spent a year and a half with Hull until he was released in May 2023.

Evans revealed last month that he had battled alcohol addiction before and after his retirement, and that he was made homeless after the collapse of a café he opened.

He told Channel Nine of his long struggle with his sexuality, saying: “I was living in denial.

”From a young age I knew that I was gay but I went down every other avenue to build up these walls, to be someone (else) to escape who I am.

“I still can’t believe I’m here talking (about it) – this is definitely my worst nightmare, but I know if I surrender, it’s the start to a new life.

“I’ve been fighting a war within since I was about 15 years old, and it’s not sustainable.”

Evans said he was helped by the Australian players’ union, whose past players and transition manager Joe Galuvao reached out, and his former Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson, who ensured the club paid for his support.

The 34-year-old went into rehab for alcohol and drug addiction and said he is now 130 days sober.

“I was sleeping in parks, doing drugs, trying to ultimately pass away so I didn’t have to come to this,” said Evans.

“But I know there are people struggling with the same struggle I’ve gone through, so I’m very blessed that I can come here and talk and be able to save a life or two.

“I’ve carried that around my whole life but I’m here today to show people you don’t have to live like that. Even now I feel more free just by saying it out loud. I’ve brought it to light.”

Evans’ alcohol issues had contributed to his release from Hull, where he made 23 appearances.

A 13-times capped Fiji international, he also played for Parramatta Eels and New Zealand Warriors after starting out at the Roosters.
