  2. From the outside this looks exactly like they are thinking outside the box… a community day working with local groups etc and rewarding supporters after they’ve moved to a totally new area and stadium this season. Worth the experiment to see if they can get new supporters, increase in merchandise etc and attract new sponsors to etc. Some people are never happy

  3. Simon died in 2020. He took part in our NRL tipping competition from the very start until his time on this earth was over. This article shows how the efforts he made to establish RL in Germany are being continued. The comp and trophy in his name are a fitting tribute to him. Best wishes to all those involved in the development of RL in Germany. Read the TotalRL article here - CLICK

  4. The Crusaders final league game of the season, Saturday 11th September, is now free entry to all as a thank you for the fans support this season. Details to get the free tickets are on Crusaders website. Anybody at a loose end please feel free to join us in what will be a great match against the Skolars.

  5. From what I've read and how the clubs have conducted themselves York, Newcastle, London and Toulouse aren't short of money. Granted Coventry and North Wales are further behind on their journey but there is a lot of optimism around the Crusaders again which is good for the game. Personally, I hope Catalans go on and win the GF and France give England a competitive game in the Autumn so we can recognise what expansion can do for the game when it is done correctly. Their introduction to Super League should be used as a model.

  6. I gave up 5 years ago for a variety of reasons, one of which was abuse. I never once felt like I was going to get hit, even these incidents have happened periodically and there were one or two during the period I was reffing. Over the 9 years I reckon I had a handful of objectively poor games (from my own perspective) and I know exactly what happened each time and I think (and hope) I learned from them. There were mistakes in other games, but given the number of decisions and the fact that it's one pair of eyes looking at 26 players and assessing multiple possible outcomes from every PTB/scrum/tackle that's got to be expected. The game day support was pretty poor in some areas, especially at the lower levels where you are trying to learn. Society meetings were very useful and worth attending.

  9. When you see how many 35’s and over we have in the squad (5) that’s potentially a lot of recruiting to be done to replace them. On top of that others who choose to move on, leaves you looking to replace half the team. There are lessons to be learned from last years recruitment policy and I think we’ll be that bit wiser this time around. So get your Squadbuilder donations in and get ready for the journey that will be 2022.

  13. If you dont think Woolf has improved Saints, I dont think you have been paying attention. Under Holbrook we played a lot of nice, attacking rugby but we were prone to an epic choke in almost every major game we played. We barely scraped by Halifax in a semi, completely lost it against Warrington at Wembley, and whilst we got the duck off our back against Salford in the 2019 GF, I think we still struggled to see the game off. I would go so far as to say a Holbrook team would have lost last years Grand Final. Had we lost that game, we could have ended up with the flat track bullies tag. Woolf has added a serious amount of steel and fortitude to our game. Its not the pretty side of the game, but Saints fans can go into big games confident because of it. I also think our supposed "boring" attack is somewhat overblown, it may not have been as slick as it was under Holbrook, but we have had the same backs pretty consistently for 5 years now, most teams have learned how to defend against us (though stopping the tries is another thing altogether). Over the last couple of weeks we have been alot more unpredictable with Welsby and Dodd and have looked a lot slicker for it - its a good time for us to have a shake up this year. As for Hurrell - he has a decision, put the effort in, be the game changer everyone knows he can be, and impress his international coach in the process, or Mata'utia, Sironen (as has just been announced), and Batchelor all start in front of him, with Wingfield and Forster not far behind. Thats not a bad position to be in.

  15. No, I won't be there. To be honest, I think it is just a glorified p***-up. The fans get exploited for what is little more than a loop fixture, and I don't see why my team, the Dragons, have such a tough fixture (ie v. Saints). I think it's all an RFL conspiracy to help Rhinos finish in a play-off berth. Oh, hang on... More seriously, I will be off to Lyme Regis on holiday, so have set the TV to record, but may well not watch them all. I cannot go a whole week without knowing the scores and do not want to, so on return will maybe watch a small selection, including Catalans -v- Saints...if Les Dracs win!

  16. Until the bulls or york confirm it I would take anything they say with a pinch of salt they are not the most reliable of sources according to them last year we were definitely signing a wakey player who didn't sign and two lads we did sign were definitely signing for other teams

  18. I do Fev will win promotion, they have already begun with the psychological process come the final, they will be well prepared. Toulouse will be reading their own press reports and consider themselves invincible this season, somewhat like what Toronto did v London Bronco's after a season of being much better than most much poorer clubs. Fev definatley have the personnel to beat Toulouse, and in a one off game that is exactly what I expect them to do, and if that does happen I wouldn't be surprised to read in these pages that the rules are all wrong, there should have been no play-offs at all Toulouse should have been promoted, it's just not fair!

  19. I refereed for 20 seasons in the UK and NZ to a high level. In my final season I realised I was only enjoying about one game in three and the reason was the accompanying ######. The players were fine - there’s only ten teams in the top division in Auckland so you knew all of them and could talk to them. In my case, it was specifically the whinging from losing coaches that was winding me up and then the occasional spectator. I was finding it harder and harder not to respond. Now I play over 40s soccer with my mates and it’s entirely stress free. Except ironically that we never get a ref and so the only dramas are with the decisions of player-refs (we had a game finish early this year when the opposition captain was sent off and literally took his ball - the only one - home with him).

  27. Great gesture by the club. Booked 2 tickets, was going anyway so hopefully there will be some merchandise I can spend some cash on given these are free. Might be an idea to put some of these tickets around the Colwyn Bay schools.

  29. The definition of transparency here. Main takeaway from that is how cancerous it really is for our clubs to be prisoners in someone else´s house. It would be ridiculous to have stadiums next to eachother but if the club now owned by a businessman from a horrific dictatorship is going to keep moving them around maybe Wigan would be better off looking for a way out and copy Saints or Wire.

  31. On the basis that you have an injury rate of about 1/4 of your squad at any given time, plus squad rotation, he'd be a useful backline addition. He could really capitalize on their go forward. Less sure about him as a second row but it's a pretty well worn path for 30 year old ex outside backs.

  33. France v England 100% confirmed Perpignan October 23rd had a call from Luc yesterday. Meeting today to confirm TV looks like BEIN SPORT in France with SKY SPORTS doing a delayed telecast (According to those on the ground in France) however I fully expect SKY SPORTS to broadcast the match LIVE. So all moving forward down there, am back next week after 2 days watching some proper Cricket at Canterbury Monday/Tuesday:) Paul

  34. I think they should be a pretty straightforward set of games to call..... ..... but the way L1 has gone this year there also could very easily be upsets (and I really hope WWR is the one and they beat Hunslet )

  36. How can you improve a club thats already Champions other than win it again (which he did) and win something they haven't won for a while like the CC (which he did), and maintain the clubs record of never finishing outside the play-off positions in the league (which he has). The only things he hasn't achieved so far is win the hubcap (which he would have done last year had he not played an academy team against Salford) and win the WCC (which he narrowly lost to the Roosters in 2020 and never got an opportunity to play for in in 2021)

  38. Don't think it's been picked up elsewhere, but Newcastle's chairman Mick Hogan says that they're going to go full-time next season. Interesting development, and you hope it doesn't go the way of Sheffield. But the noises of sustainability, genuine local development, and a rich owner that could "do a Toronto", all are good signs. I know us rugby league fans are a dour lot, but is it OK to be happy with this news?

  39. Not often I back against my own team but this could be anything IMO. I don’t think that it will lack in intensity as both sides will want to put down a marker, that intensity might ease off if one side pulls away points wise. I think that it is an important test for Catalans if they are to make the Grand Final. Hoping for a cracker.

  40. We played less than one month ago and won comfortably but this is a different game when you look at the team Catalans fielded that day and the one that they are fielding tomorrow. Despite losing only two matches in Super League and being on course to top the table, Catalans seem to have gone under the radar. Especially compared to when Castleford unexpectedly won the LLS in 2017. It's probably a bigger game for Catalans than us, as it is they who win a trophy with victory tomorrow. Really unsure which way it is going to go, wonder if a tougher game on Monday may go against us? Either way, I think these two sides have the ability to beat each other on a given day and, if we meet again in a Grand Final (big if, in my view), the result tomorrow will have little bearing.

  41. What utter Guff !!! When the decision on who to promote was being made last year nobody knew how the Covid Pandemic would affect the sport and that was one of the reasons for Toulouse not getting the spot ahead of Leigh. The risk of travel restrictions being imposed and them not being able to fulfill large numbers of fixtures was considered high at the time. Having 1 french team not being able to play would have been bad enough but 2 would have been disasterous. Just because its turned out that Catalans haven't been as badly affected as feared doesn't mean it was the wrong decision to not promote Toulouse at the time

  44. Done well since his move from the dark side has Dale and a valued squad member this season. Perhaps not an automatic choice for wing or centre but he's certainly played his part in our success this season and I'd be happy to sponsor him again, although it would be nice if he put a lot more weight on so his shirt might fit if I was fortunate to win it Keep em coming

  47. Couldn't agree more. We had a young girl (under 16 not sure exactly what age) reffing my lads U10's game last week. Parents shouting on from the sidelines disputing decisions and even an opposition coach trying to influence decisions from his touchline shouting. Ridiculous. (Opposition parents cheering when a ten year old drops the ball is another pet hate). I too had the same revelation of changing my aspect on refereeing performances some years ago, made the game a far more enjoyable one. My parents in law always have a good moan at the referee during / after a game and I've noticed my son start to make comments of his own. I've started talking to him about how difficult a job it is and how there would be no game without them, most of the time the complaints are wrong / unjustified anyway and I show him that when we watch the game back. We lead by our examples. It creates a vicious cycle of poorer quality referees when more and more people will stop doing it or never start in the first place. Changes are needed in so many aspects of the game, but Superleague coaches and players need to set that example. Of course there needs to be reviews of refereeing performances, and sometimes those performances will be poor - but that should be a behind closed door exercise. The likes of Daryl Powell & Adrian Lam highlighting certain decisions they believe to be incorrect (to pick on a couple I've noticed recently) isn't a good look and breeds a lack of respect to officials. Sky asking coaches what they thought about decisions to create a bit of controversy doesn't help either.

  48. You can keep changing the structure as much as you want but unless RL addresses the following key issues it will always wind up in the same predicament: - Take steps to have a national game with teams in major centres across the country - Greater visibility and meaningful competition for the England national team We will be back here in a year or two talking about the same issues if this two tens goes ahead. Again this comes down to vested interests, club owners like Davy aren't going to propose anything that's going to inconvenience them so him being the chairman and proposing 'solutions' is a problem
