  1. Don't really understand this thought process of being turned away from a sport because of eye watering wages. Would people stop watching movies of say George Clooney because he got paid too much, or stop buying music from a once small time group who hit the big time and became multi millionaires?
  2. Judging by the great attendances throughout the pyramid I don't think people feel like that. Anyway clubs still do charity stuff and training classes and school visits etc for the community. Even in the Prem, look how the Man City owners have put money into regeneration of their Manchester locale.
  3. Well I enjoyed St Helen's scoring, look forward to Salford's innings, tomorrow is it?
  4. Unfortunately some new viewers to the game might be looking forward to giving it a watch on national telly, and afterwards decide not to bother in future. Might be an idea to warn the BBC of this and allow them to withdraw from the game, not affecting their allowance of matches they show. Different sport and circumstances I know, but last season Luton Town in the Premier League were unable to fulfill opening home match because of difficulties adhering to competition rules, ( ground improvements not completed in time), and were given permission to postpone match. Perhaps the Salford game should have been postponed for the sake of the competition. Too late now of course.
  5. Probably not, but they seem on a sound footing. Bradford Bulls and Manchester United, former greats in a bit of a mess. One will no doubt rise again to former glories, Man Utd on the other hand deeper depths of despair await, hopefully.
  6. Hull KR and Brighton, well run clubs, punching above their weights, shrewd business off the field.
  7. Leigh Leopards and Canvey Island FC ( Isthmian League), neither has a railway station.
  8. As a Spurs fan who started watching RL about 10 years ago, I decided to follow Warrington, a bit of a change from the loser Spurs mentality. Well that worked out great didn't it?!
  9. Cricket got its name from a misunderstanding. When the rules were first written down and published in a thick tome some 2000 pages long, the poor girl asked to proofread it before final publication looked at the book at muttered " crikey." Unfortunately someone at that moment from the publishers asked her the name of the sport and thought that was the name. Then a typographical error exchanged the Y for a T, to become Criket, later spelling evolution added a middle C. Bowls, the leisurely game for the elderly was so called because it was often the case that play was interrupted by aged players taking toilet breaks. To indicate this to other players the shout of " bowels " would be heard. This was considered to be a possible name for the game, but considered too embarrassing, so the E was dropped and it became bowls.
  10. Squash the game got its name because originally players whacked Squash the fruit around the court instead of a ball, and then made a delicious drink out of the remains....probably.
  11. Polo should be called Horsebackball.
  12. Flow of the game? Gridiron has a flow? This is obviously some strange usage of the phrase I wasn't previously aware of.
  13. Off topic: Tell Liverpool it's a relief for them the inconvenience is out the way after today's shocker.
  14. I'm glad you don't think it's a daft idea. I wasn't suggesting a joint draw, rather after or before the F A cup draw, maybe separated by ten or so minutes, the One Show host whoever that is, I don't watch it either, could say ," now we go over to RFL headquarters for the Challenge Cup draw." What's wrong with that?
  15. The draw for the last 16 of the FA Cup is on The One Show tomorrow on BBC 1, the CC draw could have been done too, a double up event. If someone at the RFL gets their finger out they could at least suggest it to Aunty.
  16. I actually finished watching the whole series on dvd last week. Classic comedy.
  17. Sorry that's tosh. He's a nice lad, humble, and honoured I'm sure to do this. But I doubt his management team haven't said "you gotta do this Luke, it could really give you a boost." No way, but I'm sure he's keen, using his fame to help Warrington.
  18. Agree, it's a good news story, top notch innovation by the game at last. But for our benefit not Littler's, this puts in perspective where the two sports stand in the eyes of Joe Public.
  19. True, only Littler could have this effect, absolutely. But that's hardly the point, Warrington CEO and people on here excited because of what his presence does for SL, not the other way round.
  20. Hang on, @gingerjonwill soon correct us on all this. We're more popular and bigger than Darts, so it is all for Luke Littler's benefit, minor celeb at SL game boosts image!
  21. Announced on Sky Sports News that Warrington's HJ Stadium will be renamed Luke Littler Stadium on February 21st only , for the Catalans game. Obviously a good news story, should entice some new eyeballs on the game. Q: If you could rename your team's stadium after a celeb for one match, who would you choose?
  22. Bit disappointed in Pep, he wouldn't or COULDN'T solve City's predicament without recourse to £180m new signings. I was hoping his " genius " would come into play. No doubt of his tactical acumen and he improves players, but he hasn't proved to be other than a chequebook manager.
  23. Yeah, my bad ! It probably is profitable at the current price. It's possibly a drop in the ocean either way, not super dooper important to Sky. To use your phrase, if 21m keeps the game afloat then it is pretty small. But on topic of this thread DB's plan to walk away isn't realistic.
  24. That's true Harry, but just going by the maths, 21m ÷ by £100* per month sub = 210,000, and I doubt there's that many RL only subscribers. You yourself was one but I believe have left for SL+, I may be wrong on that. Sky as a whole is profitable so it can easily have little elements within its operation that are not self financing. Also there's their image to think of, would they really want to be seen as the Baddies walking away from a much beloved game and taking it down. * and it ain't £100 a month it's less, so the number of subscribers needed to make SL pay for itself is higher than 200K.
  25. OK, I just covered that in my post that I edited, just money from subscribers who pay ONLY for RL doesn't cover the 21m ,but because most subscribers pay to watch a number of sports , RL is a cheap way of garnering subs and fills channels particularly in summer.
