i remember going to a game down at c*s. i think it was yorks v lancs when mickey gibbins played and mick naughton was the ref. he gave a penalty against us and i shouted "how much have they paid thee" and he said "a quid". so i said "aye, there's not much tha wouldn't do for a quid". he just winked at me and grinned.

One thing this thread is showing us , is that our oficials do have a sense of humour, well they would have to have one, given the joke decisions they give.

Long Live our refs, we can't play without them.

To be a ROVER is a privilege not to be taken lightly, with fans like ours, we will always be honoured.

robin whitfield for me i often went on to pitch at game end to tell him the error of is ways -he took it in good sted and always ad a laff with me

I went to watch Wakey play Saints with Mr Whitfield officiating. He dissalowed what looked like a perfect try for Saints, when a loud Scouse voice shouted "they got your first name right... but your second name should be b*stard". Classic humour, even the ref laughed.

Anyone remember Steve Cross, who is now still working as a video referee in SL? He's probably the worst referee I've ever seen in terms of actually getting decisions right. Ironic that he now holds his current position.

What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world: culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an 'ot dog, know what I mean?

I have looked at this forum for months but only just figured out how to add something - you will be old some day! Just in case anyone is still interested in this post - the best referee at POR must surely be the one who was applauded off the field at the end. I think it was Matt Coates of Pudsey. The reason being the diabolical one at the previous game had to be escorted off (no name no court case). It must have been the late 40's or early 50's.
