Catalan win SL. How will this affect....

Recommended Posts

The more profile a team like Catalans gets the better.

One of the problems we have in League is once our super star players feel like they have achieved everything in our game they are sometimes tempted by another form of rugby that can offer them something we can`t yet.

The more powerhouse clubs that we can get in new and interesting parts of the world the greater chance that these players will stay in our code especially given the opportunity to keep playing the game just somewhere new and fresh and exciting and importantly successfully. The Broncos used to serve that purpose over here, the Roosters do now to a certain extent.

Successful clubs like Catalans, I`m hoping Toulouse, could serve the same purpose, they won`t be getting blokes like James Maloney and Sam Tomkins then when they`re 30, they might get them when they`re 25.

Don't think it will have any material impact on their World Cup chances, but think it could help the development of the game over there. You'd hope that it'd receive some strong media coverage and would help get more kids into the sport.

this was my thought... no real impact this year except maybe tv viewing (if they have a deal) and general interest (maybe travel numbers but that depends very much on the rules at the time).

2025 on the other hand could then be a watershed moment.. hosting it and with some success previously on the club front could be massive in getting participation levels and "taking it seriously" a semi final would then be a massive step up for them but also potentially a leap forward for the game.
