fevnut’s musings 2024/#06: Nu Brown and Ben Reynolds

Recommended Posts

Greetings to our rugby league friends

Every week of the season fevnut writes a blog that includes his ‘musings’ column.

Although it is primarily about Fev (obviously) fans of our opposition teams have enjoyed taking a look.

Like many, we were appalled by the sending-off of Nu Brown while playing for Hull FC. Then we read what he had to say about it and they are words that everyone should read.

The transfer of Ben Reynolds to Hull KR has prompted anger amongst many Fev fans but now we have time to reflect we have begun to look at it in a different way and distinguish between the relationship of fans to a club and that of players.

Access the article by using the link below and then by using the links on the top left-hand side of the page (by clicking on ‘Archive’) you can find all sorts of information including previous ‘fevnut’s musings’ articles.

The Ben Reynolds transfer is a curious one. He played regularly for Leigh last year, but with Asiata and Lam the main pivots, Reynolds was a bit of a spare part in general play. His decision making when playing on the edges was poor in both attack and defence, but his goalkicking was a very important aspect. In open play, his best contributions came when he'd be first receiver while Asiata was off the pitch, see the Briscoe try in the cup final as a prime example. If he'd stayed at Leigh, he might have been given a run at 13 to cover Asiata's injury.

I'm surprised he's gone to a club that already has Evalds, Hiku, Lewis, May, Litten, Parcell and Minchella competing for spine places, but his goalkicking could nudge him into the 17 again. Maybe as an interchange 9 with Litten. But his distribution and running from acting half back won't be anywhere close to Parcell's.

Yes I think he's there for an emergency should May or Lewis get injured. He's a limited half back you're right, but then you're only going to get a player with limitations to be a back-up. It will mean that we won't now need to move Litten to scrum half and disrupt the whole spine if we lose one of our first choice half-backs, which is what we were forced to do last year. Now it will just be a one-in, one-out swap.
