GEORGE WILLIAMS has explained how difficult it was to decide to leave Warrington Wolves for an NRL return with the Dolphins.
Williams, currently captaining England in the World Cup, who made 32 appearances for Canberra Raiders in 2020 and 2021, finally had his move on a two-year contract confirmed last week.
After five years with the Wolves, Williams failed to win a trophy but registered 42 tries in 121 appearances.
The 31-year-old has conceded that time was running out if he wanted to return to the NRL.
“It was a very tough decision,” he said.
“I love it here, my kids are Warrington fans now, but it’s a great opportunity for my kids to go and live in Australia,” Williams told League Express.
“It’s not just about me any more. The opportunity arose to go back out there and I thought if I didn’t do it now, then at some point I would regret it.
“I’m getting a little older. I don’t feel it, but in terms of my Rugby League career, I’m coming to the back end of it.
“Going back to Australia was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m so glad I am challenging myself at 31 in the best league in the world.
“You don’t know how sport works. That would be a good way to bow out and it’s a great lifestyle for the kids.”
The Dolphins are coached by former St Helens coach Kristian Woolf and have fellow England stars Herbie Farnworth and Morgan Knowles in their team.
Williams lost out to Tonga coach Woolf, as well as likely new halfback partner Isaiya Katoa, on Saturday when England opened their World Cup campaign with a defeat in Perth.
