GOOLE VIKINGS coach Scott Taylor believes Jack Smith has earned an opportunity to make it in Rugby League.
The 26-year-old forward, a farmer from nearby Swinefleet, is the third locally-based player to join the first-team squad (after wingers Tom Halliday and Ben Hodder), and the second (after Hodder) to progress through the club’s pathway.
Smith recently joined the first-team squad on trial after impressing for their amateur side in the Yorkshire Men’s League.
He has also played rugby union for Leeds Tykes and Goole.
Taylor feels the time is right for Smith to step up to Championship level.
“Jack is a player we’ve been watching for a while and he has received glowing reports from everyone he’s worked with within the amateur team set-up and from rugby union,” said Taylor.
“He is a no-nonsense character, works hard and leads by example. He has come straight into training, got his head down and grafted – and you can see the rest of the lads have respected that.
“We’re keen to give him a chance at some point and it’s another positive step forward for the sport in the town to see another local player get his opportunity.
“This is a proud moment for both Jack and the club.”
