Grand Final appearance a dream come true, says Williams

Wigan Warriors half-back George Williams says playing in the Grand Final on Saturday will be a “dream come true”.

The young star has impressed for Wigan during his first season with the number six shirt, striking up an impressive partnership with Matty Smith to fire Wigan to the Grand Final.

And he admits the whole experience is still surreal to him, given how he’s still only 20 years of age.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said.

“I have watched Wigan play in big finals as a kid and went with my grandad for years. To now be involved in them is totally surreal and I cannot believe it.

“It’s my hometown club and I’m really happy here. This is my third year of full-time rugby. The first year I didn’t play, last year I played 20-odd games and now this year I’m just trying to be a regular.

“Shaun (Wane) has put a lot of faith in me and I’m just trying to repay him at the moment.”

Williams is also looking forward to stepping out with close friend Joe Burgess on Saturday night, saying he hopes he will return to Wigan one day.

“Me and Budgie have played together in the same team since we were 14.

“We’re best friends and have a good combination going. We don’t even need to speak; we know where each other is going to be.

“I’ll be sad to see him leave at the end of the season but hopefully he will be back one day.”
