SATURDAY’S scheduled game between Heworth and the RAF in the first round of the 2026 Betfred Challenge Cup will not be going ahead.
Total Rugby League understands that the RAF are, for logistical reasons, unable to raise a side; play was ruled out last Saturday, when the RAF had a full complement of players on the game’s original date, because of an unfit pitch.
Heworth will now host Betfred Championship side Keighley Cougars on the weekend of 24/25 January in the second round at a venue to be confirmed.
The RAF stated: “The RAF Rugby League Association has long taken great pride in its participation in the Betfred Challenge Cup, considering every invitation to compete an honour and an important part of its sporting heritage.
“It is therefore with considerable regret that the Association announces it is unable to fulfil this year’s round one fixture.
“The postponement of last week’s scheduled match at Heworth, combined with enduring and short-notice operational demands across the Royal Air Force, has created significant and unexpected challenges in fielding a team that reflects the standards and traditions of the competition.”
A spokesman said: “We remain deeply committed to representing the Royal Air Force and proudly upholding the tradition of competing in the Challenge Cup. It is with great reluctance that we acknowledge the constraints we face this year.
“We sincerely appreciate the understanding of our partners and the wider Rugby League community as we navigate these operational challenges.
“The RAF Rugby League Association looks forward to returning to future competitions and continuing its longstanding contribution to the sport.”
