Huddersfield Giants maverick Jake Connor names the rugby league coach that has got the best out of him

HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS maverick Jake Connor has named former Hull FC assistant and ex-Castleford Tigers boss Andy Last as the rugby league coach that has got the best out of him.

Connor spent numerous years working with Last when the pair were at Hull FC, before the latter was given the head coaching job with the Black and Whites following the sacking of Lee Radford back in March 2020.

FC had been on a downward spiral up until that point, but Last helped Hull qualify for the Super League play-offs that year, before chairman Adam Pearson hired ex-Warrington Wolves fullback Brett Hodgson as head coach.

For Connor, however, he will always have fond memories of working with Last.

“I always say Andy Last,” Connor said on the BBC 5 Live podcast.

“He was a great mentor for me and I’m still really close to him now. I learnt a lot off him at my time at Hull.

“He was a really good buy, he cared about me. He always stayed in touch with me and he just seemed to have the knack to get the best out of me.

“When Lee Radford got sacked and Lasty took over, we ended up making the semi-final play-offs. Everyone wrote us off that year and he just found a way to get the best out of everyone.

“He didn’t change things too much. I can’t speak for others but personally he was very good for me.”
