LUKE ROBINSON’S reign as coach of Huddersfield Giants is over after Super League’s bottom club terminated his contract.
The development came in the wake of Huddersfield’s 26-14 loss at Bradford Bulls on Friday, a fifth defeat in five in the top flight this year and sixth in seven in all competitions.
Director of rugby Andy Kelly, the experienced former Wakefield Trinity, Gateshead Thunder, Featherstone Rovers and Dewsbury Rams team chief, has been put in interim control, with a trip to Wigan Warriors on Saturday coming up.
Kelly will also central to the process to replace Robinson, 41, who had been in charge, initially on an interim basis, since the departure of Ian Watson in July 2024 and was under contract to the end of 2027.
Before that he worked his way up through the coaching ranks at the Giants, having ended his playing career there in 2015, and was assistant to both Simon Woolford and Watson.
A halfback or hooker who also represented Wigan, Salford (then City Reds) and England, he helped Huddersfield reach the Challenge Cup final in 2009 and win the League Leaders’ Shield in 2013.
The Giants made the Challenge Cup final and finished third in Super League under Watson in 2022, but since then have struggled to make any impact, and were tenth in a then-twelve-team table last time around.
Robinson, who has had to deal with a number of injury issues throughout his tenure, won eleven of 43 league games after replacing Watson.
