Ince Rose Bridge bring joy to their LDRL team

THE MAGIC of the Challenge Cup is still alive and well in Ince, despite Rose Bridge suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of Swinton Lions to exit the tournament in the second round on Saturday.

The National Conference League team were not overawed by their Championship opponents and took an early lead.

Ince Rose Bridge led 26-22 with twelve minutes to go, but a late flurry of tries from the Lions saw them set up a Challenge Cup home tie against Super League side Wakefield Trinity.

And although the Rugby League on the field was a joy to watch, it was events off the field that made everyone beam with pride.

Ince Rose Bridge have their very own Learning Disability Rugby League team, and in their short existence they have been welcomed by everyone at the club.

The club decided to get the LDRL team involved in what was Ince Rose Bridge’s first ever home tie in the second round of the Challenge Cup.

The LDRL players – along with coach Scott Winstanley – led the home team out as club mascots and got to savour the atmosphere of a Challenge Cup, which will live long in the memories of these young players.

In another emotional moment, former Swinton Lions and Ince Rose Bridge player – Tommy Young – was guest of honour and he walked out with both teams ahead of the game.

There were some other reunions too, with Swinton coach Paul Wood returning to his amateur side, while Kenny Baker, Lucas Coan and Gavin Roden all played for Rose Bridge.

Ahead of the game, Rose Bridge put out a statement about their involvement of the LRDL team and what they mean to the club.

It read: “This weekend, we don’t just play for ourselves. We play for all of Ince Rose Bridge. Round 2 of the Challenge Cup sees us host Swinton Lions RLFC, but the real magic happens before the first whistle. Our Open Age squad will be taking to the field hand-in-hand with our LDRL team.

“In Rugby League, we talk a lot about ‘toughness.’ If you want to see what that actually looks like, look at these players.

“They have more heart and stronger spirits than any professional you’ll see on the telly. It is the highest honour for our senior lads to walk out alongside them.”

The Ince Rose Bridge Learning Disability Rugby League team train in the Dome at Rose Bridge every Saturday at 1pm.
