After Sam Burgess and Sonny Bill Williams departed the NRL for rugby union, Australian Rugby League was dealt another catastrophic blow this week, when another major star, Jarryd Hayne, announced he would be leaving to try his hand at NFL football.
Inevitably, that meant that another of the NRL’s major stars – South Sydney man Greg Inglis – would face a barrage of questions about his own future in the game this week. And when fronting up to the media in Brisbane on Friday, Inglis said although he believes he’ll finish his career in Rugby League, the door is “always there to be opened”.
“I think that I will finish my sporting career in Rugby League for now but the door’s always there to be opened and always to be pushed to see what’s on the other side,” he said. “You’ve just got to sit back and weigh up your options when the time comes and when that does who knows?
“I’m always going to keep my options open and see what’s around but in saying that I made a decision to stay in this game a long time ago and would like to say that I’ll see my career out in rugby league, but who knows what’s floating around the corner.”
Inglis did admit it regularly crosses his mind about trying his hand at different sports – with many believing he could make the transition to another code with ease.
“It always crosses my mind about being challenged at different sports in general at an elite level. I put all that on hold just to achieve my ultimate goal here of winning a premiership with the Bunnies.
“People throw my name up about (having a crack at the NFL) but in the end it comes back to a personal choice.”
