STALWART skipper Jack Owens, who played in Super League for Widnes Vikings in the first of two spells with his hometown club, is among four confirmed departures.

Highly-rated fullback Nathan Connell is heading to Bradford Bulls and Wales winger Mike Butt to Salford, while versatile forward Jack Houghton will also leave.

Widnes remain in contract-extension discussions with centre Matty Fleming.

Utility back Owens, 32, came through the old Widnes Academy to make his debut at 16 in 2011, with the club elevated to the top flight for the following year under the then-licensing system.

He had two seasons with St Helens and one with Leigh Leopards (then Centurions) before returning to Widnes in 2019 as they tackled a return to the Championship after relegation and major financial challenges.

Owens, who has been captain since 2020 and has this year played centre, stand-off and fullback, has exceeded 220 Widnes appearances and topped 1,000 points, having been a regular goal-kicker earlier on his career.

“Jack’s spirit and attitude, both on and off the pitch, embody everything it means to be a Widnes Vikings player,” said the club.

“His mentorship, professionalism and leadership qualities have been invaluable to countless players, coaches and staff members. He leaves as a true Widnes legend.”

Owens (as well as Connell) was in action on Saturday as Widnes were beaten 34-16 at Newcastle Thunder in a play-off qualifying final.

They host Oldham in a sudden-death tie on Sunday.
