Leeds Rhinos’ James McDonnell signs two-year deal with Perth Bears

JAMES McDONNELL is looking forward to playing alongside Harry Newman when the pair move to Perth Bears together at the end of the season.

McDonnell has joined his Leeds Rhinos team-mate Newman in signing a two-year contract with Perth for when they enter the NRL in 2027.

It’s reward for 26-year-old McDonnell’s recent rise, becoming a Super League regular in his three seasons to date at Leeds after making just six appearances at first club Wigan Warriors.

He was named in the Dream Team for the first time last year and was also called up to the England training squad.

“It’s been an ambition of mine to play in the NRL and I’m absolutely delighted to be given that chance with Perth Bears,” said McDonnell.

“The NRL is the toughest competition in the world, and I can’t wait to get over to Western Australia and test myself against the best of the best.

“It’s great to know that Harry Newman and a few other lads from Super League will be joining me.

“My focus is on giving 100 percent for the Rhinos this year but it’s exciting to think that in a year’s time I’ll have the chance to be a part of history.”

McDonnell’s signing follows the addition of Melbourne Storm pair Tyran Wishart and Nick Meaney as inaugural coach Mal Meninga’s squad begins to take shape.

Toby Sexton and Iszac Fa’asuamaleaui, from Catalans Dragons, and London Broncos pair Luke Smith and Emarly Bitungane will all join after only one season in the northern hemisphere.

Canterbury Bulldogs’ Josh Curran, Liam Henry of Penrith Panthers, Sean Russell from Parramatta Eels and Cronulla Sharks’ Chris Vea’ila have also signed up.

Meninga, who left his role as Australia head coach to lead the Bears, believes McDonnell has high potential.

“I’ve kept an eye on McDonnell for a few years now and I thought he really went to another level in 2025,” said Meninga.

“I’m confident he will develop more this season and I’m excited to see what he can bring to the Bears.”
