SKY SPORTS pundits Jon Wilkin and Sam Tomkins have been less than impressed with Warrington Wolves during the 2025 Super League campaign.
The pair were in the Sky Sports studio ahead of Warrington’s final game of the regular season at Craven Park last weekend with Hull KR top of the table.
For the Wolves, they have been catastrophically bad in the league and narrowly missed out on Challenge Cup success to Hull KR.
But, Wilkin gave his own assessment of the 2025 season for Sam Burgess’ side.
“I think they are consistently between third and fifth or sixth in the competition and that’s why this season has been such a disappointment,” Wilkin said.
“When you play a full season, it wipes out form, media hype, criticism, refereeing calls whatever it is and this is a true reflection of where Warrington are at.
“They have had injuries and suspensions but everyone goes through that. Warrington’s season, after Vegas, nosedived.”
Even then though, Wilkin could not put his finger on why that is.
“I have no idea, you’d have to be within those four walls to understand why. A chronic lack of confidence, I think when Sam Burgess came he gave them that because he has got an aura about him.
“They absorbed confidence from him but you don’t have to scratch too far beneath the surface to find out if the confidence is there or not.
“Warrington’s pack is just not good enough to compete. It doesn’t scare me to look at it – who is going to take the fight to other teams.”
Tomkins added: “They’ve probably gone into 2025 like they went into 2024 and worked on the little extras, but they’ve not done the basics right.
“They’ve not been consistent, they’ve not been putting their bodies on the line like they did last year.
“Sam will be looking to strip it right back to basics for 2026 and build much more resilience than they currently have.
“There has to be more signings coming through the door if there is going to be more change.
“They need a few more recruits to change this side from eighth to a play-off team. I don’t think they have enough.”
