Josh Charnley anticipating a big season for Leigh Leopards

JOSH CHARNLEY has claimed that is an “exciting time” to be a Leigh Leopards player as the Super League club aims to go one better in 2026.

The Leopards have reached the Super League semi-final play-offs the past two years running, but fell at the final hurdle – ironically, both times against Wigan Warriors.

The appetite for silverware is still strong amongst the Leigh players, with Charnley keen to emphasise that the lack of player turnover this year has helped strengthen the side.

“We’ve had a good few years now, but we want to go and do one better,” Charnley said.

“We’ve got to the semi-finals the last two years and our ambition is to go all the way.

“Like every team, you set targets and aim for silverware to get where you want and we’ve got a good squad here.

“Not many people have left and we’ve brought some players in who will challenge for spots, so it’s an exciting time.”

For Charnley, 2026 is a key season for him to stay fit after a stop-start 2025.

“I think this is my 16th pre-season, maybe my 17th. It doesn’t get any easier but it’s enjoyable being back in and around the boys.

“I went away with my family and then went to Dublin with a few mates whilst also doing some bricklaying.

“I kept myself busy over the off-season period, which was needed. We take a lot of blows through the season; it’s physically and mentally draining.

“We need that time away to recuperate but after two or three weeks, I am missing the routine and the boys.

“I had a freak injury last year, which left me out of the squad for a while, but I have managed that well over the off-season by trying to take the pain out of the knee.

“I am good to go and can’t wait for the new season.”
