Kieron Cunningham: Saints “deserve” Grand Final spot

St Helens assistant coach Kieron Cunningham insists the players deserve their place in the Super League Grand Final, after they defeated in-form Catalan Dragons 30-12 to earn a spot at Old Trafford.

Cunningham likened Saints’ return to the showpiece event to the “good old days”, and says the squad are fully deserving of their place in the final, where they will face either Wigan or Warrington for the right to be crowned Super League champions for 2014.

“It seems like the good old days,” said Cunningham. “We are at the big dance and the boys deserve it. Against all the adversity with the players we’ve lost, I’m proud as punch for the boys.

“We knew if we just stuck to the game plan we could eventually grind Catalan down. They’ve had a really difficult task but we knew if we kick ball long, chase hard and make tackles, we would get the result.

“We started a little nervous but the atmosphere was great and the players are really wanting it.”
