Liam Marshall sure more chances will come for Wigan Warriors

LIAM MARSHALL is sure more trophy chances will come Wigan Warriors’ way after failing to win any silverware this year.

The club finished the season empty-handed for the first time in Matt Peet’s four-year reign as head coach after losing to Hull KR in the Grand Final.

For winger Marshall, who had been part of both their previous two Grand Final victories and whose late try snatched the Challenge Cup for the Warriors in 2022, it was a first final defeat since 2017 at Wembley (he missed the 2020 Grand Final due to injury).

“Massive credit to Hull KR – they got it right on the night,” he said.

“They have been the stand-out team all season and they cemented that reputation.

“We didn’t really play our best game and they took advantage, so big congrats to Hull KR.”

During the presentation Marshall joined all his team-mates in the nice touch of applauding the many triumphant Hull KR fans packed into the East Stand.

Marshall explained: “After we got our runners-up medals we had to go round in front of them so it seemed fitting to give them a clap and show our appreciation of what they have done this season.

“For us it’s a season without a trophy and, after last year, that’s disappointing, but it also shows the standard we set for ourselves at this club.

“There will be other trophies to go for in seasons to come.

“I’m a big family man and it was good to have my wife Meg and my dad and others here  – they put it into perspective.

“My niece and nephew were here and I don’t think they’ve been to a loss before and they were quite upset, so I went over after to console them.”
