Marwan Koukash: I want to pay my players more

Salford Red Devils owner Dr Marwan Koukash has slammed the RFL and called for the salary cap to be increased.

The business tycoon, who owns a string of famous racehorses, also criticised the lucrative Sky Sports TV deal, which was exclusively revealed in Monday’s League Express.

Koukash said: “I want to pay my players more.

“There is no tab on what the RFL are being paid and it’s our money they are spending.

“I have spoken a lot to Nigel Wood at the RFL and said we’re going to disagree a lot this season but we are not going to get divorced.

“When they first brought me in they thought I was a saint. But I’m a devil and I’m going to show that.

“Players are gladiators who put their bodies on the line. If we don’t raise Super League they will go to union.

“Please let the Super League clubs run the game.

“It’s been a long twelve months assembling a new squad but when I’m stressed I think of what we we’ve done and what we can achieve.

“When we play our first fixture on February 16 I will be more excited than when I had sex for the first time.”

Before that last comment has time to sink in, read what Koukash said about his side’s ambitions for the new season.

“Our real target is being at Old Trafford. The top four is what I am aiming for.”
