MATTY ASHTON says he will achieve his “number one goal” with England on Saturday after coming back from knee surgery to play in the World Cup.
That ACL injury not only wrecked Ashton’s 2025 season with Warrington Wolves, but also stopped the winger from playing for England in the subsequent Ashes series against Australia.
Now, following his inclusion in England’s squad for the clash against France, Ashton is determined to realise a dream he began manifesting during the ten-month rehabilitation from that devastating blow.
“It’s a great feeling,” Ashton said. “When I was coming back from my ACL, one of my number one goals was making this squad.
“It’s been in the back of my mind to be part of the squad to represent our country in Australia.
“It’s the kind of chats you have with your rehab crew. I had (Warrington teammate) Albert Hopoate in with me and we were talking about me hopefully being in Australia at the end of this for the World Cup and seeing him afterwards.
“I’m just happy it’s all come to the forefront and I’ve got the chance to be over here.”
Ashton was initially named among the substitutes for the clash against France, before England boss Brian McDermott chose to bring in the Warrington man in place of Zach Eckersley.
“I found out just before everyone else did,” Ashton continued.
“I don’t think it’s really changed my prep as I’ve been in the 19 anyway.
“Anyone in there can come on at any time so you have to be ready to play. That means you have to prepare in the exact same way as you normally would.
“When I found out, I was over the moon to be honest.”
