ENGLAND head coach Brian McDermott has hailed Wakefield Trinity’s superb Grand Final victory.
Trinity ran out 23-10 winners over Warrington at Old Trafford, a week after demolishing Wigan Warriors in the same manner, to win their first Super League title.
“You’ve got a group of players who knew to stick to an attack plan in Wakefield,” McDermott said.
“Daryl (Powell, coach) has got a great history of getting his players sticking to an attack plan. He did it at Castleford and shocked the world and he seems to be doing the same at Wakefield.
“It’s an astonishing collection of performances back-to-back. I actually thought they had hit their mark against Wigan and didn’t think they could back it up so they did really well.
“I’m from Wakefield so I understand what the sport means to people in the city. They haven’t had the best results in recent years.”
McDermott also touched upon owner Matt Ellis, the man credited with turning Trinity around off the field.
“In my time in the game as a coach and player, I think this is the first time that Wakefield have gone about things properly,” he added.
“No sustained success can happen without good ownership and I think he’s gone about it the right way and they’ve got a great coach in Daryl Powell.
“They look a really well-run club. The stadium is clean, unique and very vibrant – before Matt Ellis was there, you had to have a quick shower after you visited.”
