McIlorum best hooker in Super League, says Wane

Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane believes that his hooker Michael McIlorum is the standout No.9 in Super League, despite some healthy competition.

Warrington’s Daryl Clark is the reigning Man of Steel after a superb year for Castleford in 2014, and James Roby played a key role in helping St Helens win Super League, claiming the Harry Sunderland Trophy in the Grand Final win against Wigan.

But Wane says that McIlorum is the best in his position “by far”, and says he’d like to see the hooker get more recognition.

When asked if he thought McIlorum was the best, he said: “For me yes, by far. I know they don’t look, in the Man of Steel about how they defend, that never gets mentioned and Daryl Clark is a great attacking player.

“But the other side of his game he needs to improve. Micky Mac is a great attacker and one of the best defenders in the comp. I like my defence, and I like him as a kid as well. I’d like him to get the plaudits he deserves.”
