McIlorum unlikely to return this season

Michael McIlorum does not expect to play again this season.

The Wigan hooker has missed the last six months after breaking his ankle in the Warriors’ World Club Series defeat to Brisbane Broncos in February.

Both he and the club were hopeful that the 28-year-old could feature again at some point this season, despite originally being ruled out for the year.

There had been suggestions that the England international was nearing a return, however he told Wigan Today that he doesn’t expect to play this season.

“I think I’ll be struggling for this season,” he said.

“I was hoping to get back in the next couple of weeks, but I think time is running out.

“The surgeon says it’s going to plan, and that I can’t rush it because it was a traumatic injury, but it’s not going as quick as I want it to!

“I’d set targets in my head that probably aren’t realistic, so I’ve probably made it tough for myself, but that’s my mindset – I just want to be back as soon as I can and help the boys out. It’s a case of so close, but so far.”
