DEWSBURY RAMS coach Glenn Morrison admits the signings of Andy Kain and Kyle Trout were unexpected, but he has welcomed their arrival.
Kain joined last week from Hunslet and Trout from Wakefield to significantly bolster a squad that Morrison thought was already complete. He said: “It was a bit of a surprise – I’d been speaking to an agent I hadn’t talked to for a while and it was initially about something else.
“He asked if I’d be interested in them and we had a little bit of money still set aside.
“Both players are coming for the right reasons – they’re not coming for big money, because that’s not what we’re about.
“I’m really happy that we’ve been able to get them on board and that it’s been done so quickly.”
Morrison feels both players will improve his side for 2016. He said:
“Both of them are quality players with a lot of experience.
“I’ve known Trouty since I helped develop him in my last year playing at Wakefield and then I coached him there.
“He’s a tough kid who trains hard and throws his body about on the field, and he’s got plenty of pace as well.
“I think he’s just been unlucky at Wakefield for the last 18 months, because he’s been loaned out or on dual registration with a few clubs and he’s been back and forth a lot.
“He hasn’t found anywhere to settle but hopefully he has now and he can dig in and cement a spot for himself.
“Andy Kain will say himself that he didn’t have the best year, and he had a couple of niggling injuries.
“He was playing in a team that wasn’t winning many matches and was on the back foot a lot, which is hard for any halfback.
“Now hopefully we can get him back to his best. We’ve strengthened in the pack so hopefully he’ll be on the front foot.
“He’s still one of the best halfbacks in the competition and he can help develop our younger guys as well.”
On his 2016 squad, Morrison added: “I thought I was finished a couple of weeks ago but I’m glad we’ve been able to get these two in.
“We’ll be running with similar numbers to last year, and looking to drip-feed a few players in from the second team.
“They’ll train with us and they know if they perform here they could get a run.”
