Newcastle Thunder outline plans for Armed Forces fixture

NEWCASTLE THUNDER have outlined plans for their Armed Forces Day fixture later this month.

The match against Whitehaven at Blaydon on Saturday, June 27 will be used to showcase both the club and Rugby League in the Armed Forces, and also to drive recruitment for the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army, Royal Air Force, Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

Thunder’s match, before which the home team will warm up in special limited-edition shirts supporting the Royal British Legion, kicks-off at 4.00 and will be preceded by a game between The Royal Navy and Scotland A (1.00).

Scotland A are coached by Adam Houston, part of the renowned Rugby League set-up at Northumbria University, with whom Thunder gave strong links.

The Royal Navy again took part in the Challenge Cup this year, being beaten 18-4 by Hammersmith Hills Hoists in a first-round tie at Portsmouth.

Incidentally new England coach Brian McDermott served as a Royal Marine for five years before starting his professional playing career with Bradford in 1994.

An Armed Forces village will be created at Thunder’s Crow Trees (Blaydon Rugby Union Club) ground, including displays and activities, including an assault course.

There will also be a fanzone, while The Band of the Royal Fusiliers will play.

“We are acutely aware that Armed Forces Day is a busy time for our services, and we are incredibly honoured that they have chosen to support us to help grow Rugby League in the North East,” said Thunder chief executive Richie Metcalfe.

“This day is about showcasing our deep appreciation for the Armed Forces, providing a prime engagement opportunity for the local Armed Forces units and Blue Light services, while also exposing new fans to our great sport.”
