Nigel Wood opens talks with NRL

RFL prospective Chairman Nigel Wood opened talks with his NRL opposite number Peter V’landys last week when the two met in Las Vegas.

And he is hoping that the talks will lead to a productive relationship between the two bodies as time unfolds.

That might see the NRL taking a significant stake in Rugby League in the northern hemisphere, although Wood insists that there are other groups interested in doing likewise.

“There was dialogue with the NRL across the week and we expect that to continue over the coming weeks,” said Wood.

“We remain open minded on what a potential partnership could look like.

“Some might see this as the NRL versus Super League, but it’s really all about Rugby League versus the rest of the sporting world.

“We will also keep discussing options with the several other suitors who have shown a keen interest.

“There really hasn’t been a better time to invest in our sport and I am confident the right outcome for a positive future will be achieved for the global game.”

Meanwhile Wood, who attended the NRL extravaganza in Las Vegas for the first time last weekend, was full of praise for the initiative.

“Las Vegas was an incredible weekend and event. It showed the global reach Rugby League can have when its two professional leagues come together and work collaboratively,” he said.

“The Fremont Street event will live long in the memory and I am sure it opened the eyes of the NRL to everything great about UK Rugby League and its fans. It was a great and uplifting celebration of the friendship and camaraderie that exist around the world of Rugby League.

“15,000 passionate English fans with a kaleidoscope of club jerseys united and partying ensured that global Rugby League took over the so-called entertainment capital of the world.

“It is clear to everyone, including those I spoke to at the NRL and at Australian clubs, that the UK added tremendous value to the weekend. The entertainment on offer across the day on Saturday, in a world-class facility, elevated the sport to new highs.

“Over the last six months, the UK has shown it can deliver world-class events and matches starting with the Ashes, before the unbelievable World Club Challenge in Hull and culminating with the clash of two excellently run powerhouses in Vegas.

“It shows we have a vibrant competition with growth in all the metrics, not to mention the success we have seen for the three newly-promoted clubs, both in terms of attendances and their competitive start to life in Super League.”
