NRL: Burgess leaves Bunnies with five awards

Union-bound Sam Burgess picked up a clean sweep of awards at South Sydney’s end-of-season dinner last night.

The 25-year-old, who ended his NRL career in style by winning the Grand Final with a fractured cheekbone, was named fans’ player of the year, players’ player and clubman of the year. He also picked up the George Piggins medal – given to the best and fairest player – and The Burrow Appreciation award, which is decided by a South Sydney Supporters group.

In other categories, Greg Inglis was awarded best try for his round eight effort against the Broncos, while Issac Luke was recognised for his hit of the year on Manly’s Cheyse Blair in round two.

Alex Johnston was Rookie of the Year and top try-scorer, with 21 in 18 appearances.
