NRL deal to be put to RFL board

THE outline of an NRL investment deal will be considered at a Rugby Football League board meeting on Thursday.

Members will decide whether or not to approve in principle the latest version of a proposal for a future agreement which would see the NRL have involvement in Super League.

Talks have been held in Australia during the World Cup between NRL executive chairman Peter V’landys, RFL chair Nigel Wood and RL Commercial chief executive Rhodri Jones in an attempt to bring year-long negotiations towards a conclusion.

A green light would not be the last stage of the process, with final approval on the whole substance of the deal likely to be sought from clubs at an RFL Council meeting scheduled for December.

Given the delay in reaching an agreement, the partnership could begin for the 2028 season, rather than next year as initially envisaged.

The fate of London Broncos is not on the agenda, with Super League expansion next season a matter for the clubs in that competition to decide.

Meanwhile, the NRL have expressed a desire to separately invest in the French game following their World Cup struggles.

V’landys has met with officials from their federation and said: “France is high on our agenda.

“They came out to Australia and we met with Trent Robinson (who is director of the national team) and indicated we would like to help them.”
