Penrith Panthers advanced to week three of the NRL play-offs in the most dramatic fashion, as Jamie Soward’s 80th minute drop-goal saw them consign defending champions Sydney to a shock defeat.
The Roosters were leading 18-12 heading into the final three minutes, before an incredible try for the Panthers pulled the game level. With the ball seemingly bouncing dead, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak scooped the ball back into play from midair, leaving Dean Whare with the simplest of finishes.
Soward converted from the touchline to level up matters, before he slotted the most dramatic one-pointer from over 30 metres out with just seconds left in the clock.
The result means Penrith – who finished fourth – get a week off along with South Sydney, whilst the table-topping Roosters must now do it the hard way. They will face North Queensland Cowboys, who defeated Brisbane to end the Broncos’ season.
