Radford: Shaul is the best

Hull FC coach Lee Radford said it is difficult to think of a better English fullback than his own star Jamie Shaul.

Shaul returned to the Hull side on Sunday and played a telling role as the Black and Whites made it six wins from seven, as they defeated Wakefield 46-28.

And when asked about the 23-year-old’s form, Radford was full of praise for Shaul.

“He and Matty Russell are right up there in terms of the top English fullbacks,” Radford said.

“There are areas of improvement for him but he’s working tirelessly on his game.

“There are plays that have a real impact on the game which he’s involved with, and it takes a special kind of player to do that.

“You’d be pushing to find a better one.”

Radford was delighted that his side managed to get back to winning ways on Sunday, but he identified some key games ahead for his side, which starts on Friday with a game against Catalans Dragons.

“It’s a huge period now,” he said.

“It’s a challenge for our players, because on Friday we want it to be bouncing when Catalans get here.

“They’ve found their mojo on an aeroplane and we’ll have to be at our best to beat them. We’re in a great position, so long may it continue.”
