FORMER Swinton Lions hooker Luke Waterworth has come out of retirement to join Rochdale Hornets.
Waterworth spent more than six years with Swinton, making 133 appearances, but retired in early 2023.
Now the 29-year-old is back in the game having signed a one-year deal with Gary Thornton’s side.
“I’ve had a few years away from the game, but I’ve found my love for rugby again and I’m excited to get started,” said Waterworth.
Hornets chairman Andy Mazey said: “This is an outstanding piece of business, to sign a player of Luke Waterworth’s experience and proven Championship quality.”
Waterworth started his career with Wigan Warriors, playing one first-team game, and Rochdale have also signed another of that club’s academy prospects.
Dylan Kelly-Duffy, who made seven appearances on loan with the Hornets from Wigan last season, has now penned a permanent deal.
“He made a real impact when we brought him in on loan this year, playing in the back row and quickly earning a reputation as a no-nonsense, go-forward player,” said Mazey.
