Salford on the brink of relegation after shock defeat to London

Salford must beat Batley in their final game of the Qualifiers to avoid automatic relegation, after suffering a shock defeat to Championship side London 19-16.

Ian Watson’s side, who have now lost four of their six games in the Qualifiers, were well off the pace as they were outplayed and outthought by the superb Broncos.

Should London defeat Featherstone and the Bulldogs overcome the Red Devils, Marwan Koukash’s club will be relegated without the need for the Million Pound Game, with Andrew Henderson’s side taking the final spot.

London were 10-4 ahead at half-time following tries through halfbacks William Barthau and Scott Leatherbarrow, with George Griffin responding for the Super League side.

The Broncos extended their lead after half-time following a stunning Jamie Soward try, whose subsequent penalty goal extended the lead to 18-6.

Barthau’s drop goal gave London a three-score cushion, and although Josh Griffin scored twice late on, the Broncos held on for a stunning victory that puts Salford’s Super League status in serious jeopardy.

A full report will be in Monday’s League Express.
