Salford Red Devils have announced the signing of Reni Maitua on a deal from Championship side Featherstone Rovers for the rest of the season – as well as capturing Wigan centre Iain Thornley, also for the rest of 2015.
The Red Devils say they have fought off interest from other clubs for the 33-year-old utility who can play in the back row, forwards and halves. He joined the Rovers ahead of the 2015 season and has been one of the standout players in the Kingstone Press Championship so far this year, scoring 5 tries in 13 appearances for Featherstone.
He made his debut for Canterbury Bulldogs in 2004 and was part of the team that won the 2004 NRL Premiership, defeating the Sydney Roosters. He made 100 appearances for Canterbury during his six years with the club, scoring 23 tries.
Assistant Coach, Ian Watson said on Maitua: “We are really excited about the forthcoming challenge of the Middle 8’s and a player of Reni’s experience and versatility will be a great asset for the Club in this series of matches.
“Reni has been one of the outstanding performers in the Championship this year, and we are very confident with his huge experience at the very highest levels of the game that we can hit the ground running in Super League.”
Red Devils CEO Martin Vickers said: “We’d like to thank Featherstone Rovers for their cooperation on this matter. We know Featherstone are a progressive Club and their support on this matter has been very much appreciated.”
