Sam Burgess owns up to mistakes in poor Warrington Wolves year

SAM BURGESS has vowed to come back better after admitting his own faults this season – and to crack down on internal discipline.

Warrington Wolves endured a very disappointing Super League campaign, finishing eighth with only ten wins from 27 matches.

Reaching the Challenge Cup final – and coming within minutes of Wembley glory against Hull KR – couldn’t mask a slide from Burgess’ first year as head coach, when Wire finished third and won twice as many league games.

Former England captain Burgess, in his first top coaching role, is contracted for next season and has been backed to right the wrongs.

“As a head coach it’s only my second year, and (with) some of the lessons I’ve learned I’ll be a much better coach in the upcoming season,” said Burgess.

“I didn’t quite nail a couple of things in pre-season. We went away from a couple of things that worked really well in year one.

“We should have gone right back to the beginning, right back to the basics, so we’ll be doing that this time.”

Burgess said that the coaching team’s “delivery needs to be a bit better”, and also admitted that discipline was not good enough in the squad.

Star men Matt Dufty and Toby King were both dropped from the side in the closing stages of the season due to breaches of the club’s internal standards.

“It’s something we need to be hard on, from the top of the club down,” said Burgess.

“As a head coach I have acceptable and not acceptable (standards), and then it’s up to the players to police that.

“We’ll put a big onus on developing some of our leaders internally, and keeping our standards high from the pre-season.

“Some things weren’t acceptable within the group. To be fair the players accepted it and have since been in a better position.”
