Sam will come back to Rugby League, hopes Julie Burgess

Sam Burgess will hopefully return to Rugby League and the NRL one day – that’s the view of his mother Julie, who told reporters in Australia that she was “heartbroken” when he revealed he was switching codes at the end of the season.

Burgess will return to England to take up a contract with Bath RU following this Sunday’s NRL Grand Final between his South Sydney side and Canterbury, ending a five-year association with the Rabbitohs, after joining back in 2010.

And Julie said that the moment Sam told her he was leaving the Rabbitohs was a gut-wrenching moment for her – but she sincerely hopes he will be back one day, as well as admitting she respects his decision to embark on a new challenge.

“It was pretty heartbreaking,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I remember Sam sitting me down on Coogee steps and saying ‘mum, I have got something to tell you’. I was looking in his eyes and realised it was something pretty serious.

“When he told me what he was planning on doing I said ‘no Sam, you can’t do this. Don’t break my heart. We are all here now’. But when he explained his reasons and what goals he had set for himself, how could you not respect that. I hope he will come back but I totally respect his decision.”
