Scotland shut out the Netherlands

SCOTLAND Women enjoyed a 54-0 victory over Netherlands in Castricum, with fullback Becky Smart running in three of their ten tries and kicking seven goals.

Eve Tonkin and Emma Welsford both scored twice while Sammi Simpson, Bella Kendrick-Naylor and Chloe Newbigging also crossed.

The Scotland side were only set up last year and this was their third international win, after beating Jamaica in November and USA in February. They lost to Canada in July.

Coach Ady Picton said: “Everything came off for us. We were really good, we’ve had some great sessions together and that work showed.”

Netherlands assistant coach Vera van der Zwan said: “We are proud of the effort, keeping in mind lots just played their first game of Rugby League.”

Jamaica won their first-ever women’s international, 20-6 against Greece in Crete.

After a scoreless first half, a Hannah McPherson try, two scores by London Broncos’ Emily Bell and four Veronica Blair goals were enough for Jamaica.

“This a fabulous win for us after so much work has gone into establishing a women’s side,” said Jamaica coach Darren Collins.

“Our desire in defence to hold Greece out in the first half was tremendous and then we capitalised on the chances we made.”

Greece registered late through an Sophia Anagnostopoulou try converted by Georgia Kalomenopoulou.

Coach Nick Stephanou said: “I’m very proud of my girls, who never stopped trying, especially in defence.”
