Shaun Wane ‘devastated’ by Ashes series defeat

SHAUN WANE said he was “devastated” after England succumbed to a series defeat against Australia.

The Kangaroos sealed the Ashes with a match to spare by winning 14-4 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

England were greatly improved from the opener at Wembley, a 26-6 defeat, but that was of little consolation to coach Wane.

“I was proud for the majority of the game – for 70 minutes we were good,” he said.

“We switched off for ten minutes after half-time and it hurt us immensely.

“The first try (by Cameron Munster) was soft, it shouldn’t be scored in a Test match.

“We did a lot of good things today, just not enough.

“I’m devastated. It hurts. I’m very proud that the players had a dig but so disappointed with (the spell) after half-time which cost of us dearly. I’m really hurt at the moment.

“Both (tries) we needed to defend better. They’re not tries that should have been scored in a Test match.

“Fair play to Australia, they were ruthless. But we can and should do better.

“I wanted to see more thrown at them. They defended really well but in periods of the first half we had a lot of ball.

“I wanted us to build pressure in the game. We didn’t do that last week and did this week, but some detail in our attack (should have been better).

“Give a lot of credit to Australia, they play a lot of Test (quality) matches in their comp, intense games. That makes me feel proud that we’ve stuck at it for 70 minutes today.

“Still, the overriding feeling for me is disappointment at not finishing the job.”
