ST HELENS chairman Eamonn McManus says there will no be rush to appoint their next head coach – and is not concerned by the club’s continued losses.
They look likely to miss out on the Super League play-offs for the first time after a third straight defeat on Thursday night, 32-18 at home to Hull FC.
That was again under interim coach Eamon O’Carroll, following last month’s departure of Paul Rowley after less than a year in charge.
“We are going to get another coach but we won’t rush that decision,” McManus told Sky Sports ahead of the Hull game.
“We know the team needs to be improved. That’s the priority.
“To be a successful club you need the best players on the pitch and the best coach in the game.
“I’ve been blown away by the number of and calibre of coaches we have had apply.
“Regardless of the season we have had, we are still St Helens and a leading name in rugby league.
“We are currently narrowing the list down to four or five candidates.”
In their recent financial accounts for 2025, Saints’ losses were more than £3.4m, despite a slight rise in income.
“Our levels of losses are similar to other clubs,” McManus said. “Every other top club has a backer to ensure a shortfall in funding is met.
“We want success, that breeds commercial success and to achieve that we need to invest.”
McManus also expressed his sympathy with frustrated supporters, saying: “I think we’ve got the greatest fans in the world.
“What the fans won’t accept are certain levels not being attained, whether that’s effort, commitment or pride – any set of fans are like that.
“We have some of the most passionate fans in the world and I don’t want that to change. We need to ensure they are passionate about what they see.”
