St Helens put down a marker with Warrington victory

St Helens were far too strong for Warrington Wolves tonight at the Totally Wicked Stadium, turning a 20-6 half-time score into a convincing 38-12 victory.

St Helens came into the game on the back of their 18-10 defeat in Perpignan last Saturday to the Catalans Dragons, while the Wolves had moved to the top of the Super League table following their 48-12 victory over London Broncos.

Saints were able to recall Jonny Lomax into the team to partner Danny Richardson at halfback, while the Wolves were still missing the injured Bryson Goodwin and Jake Mamo.

Saints opened the scoring with a penalty from Lachlan Coote, but a Blake Austin try gave the lead to Warrington, with Mark Percival responding for St Helens. But the crucial point in the first half was the sin inning Wolves prop Mike Cooper on 27 minutes for a high tackle on Danny Richardson. Saints then added two converted tries from Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Jonny Lomax to give them a 20-6 half-time lead.

The Wolves threatened to come back into the game when Daryl Clark scored a converted try, but after that it was all St Helens, with Matty Lees, Regan Grace and Tommy Makinson touching down, and Coote adding three goals, including a penalty for an eight-point try when Tom Lineham fouled Grace in the act of scoring.
