Super League could be expanded further as Clint Goodchild lays out York Knights attraction

YORK chairman Clint Goodchild believes Super League could be expanded further in the future, but believes that the structure of the competition is more important than the numbers.

The Knights have been propelled to the top flight for the 2026 Super League season, along with Bradford Bulls and Toulouse Olympique, with the competition expanding to 14 teams.

With Salford Red Devils making way due to financial issues, it promises to be a new-look Super League next season.

There have also been calls for the northern hemisphere game to eventually follow in the footsteps of the NRL by expanding further, but Goodchild has a warning.

“The expansion to 14 teams certainly has given us a chance to make it to Super League but it’s about what the structure of the competition is rather than the number of teams in it,” Goodchild told League Express.

“I’m a supporter of grading and franchise as a means to selection. I think teams need to meet a lot of minimum standards.

“I think it could be expanded further in time. You want to get to a point where your growth is organic and there are opportunities on the back of that.”

Ahead of their first-ever season in Super League, the Knights are not changing things off the field from what has been a success so far as Goodchild explains the appeal of the North Yorkshire club.

“We have always marketed York as a unique side. Our plans don’t change regardless of what league we are in.

“We are executing our marketing as we have for the last four years. York is very attractive because it does have a large catchment area with North Yorkshire and beyond.

“We are just very excited to see what happens on the back of hard work. We have grown substantially year on year, it’s been a positive trend.”
