FOUR Super League clubs could be represented on Sunday when Wales take on Canada in the first World Cup warm-up match of the year.
While the Ravens haven’t qualified for this season’s tournament, Tom Brindle’s Wales side will face England, Australia and Samoa in the autumn, and this test against a touring Canada side will prove a useful exercise, especially for the five new players to the squad who may be in line for their debut caps.
Wales will once again be led by Wigan Warriors’ Bethan Dainton, who will pay alongside club teammate Carys Marsh.
Huddersfield Giants duo Georgia Cussons and Gracie Hobbs as well as Dani McGifford of St Helens could also feature. York Valkyrie’s Agnes Wood has also been selected and could find herself up against club teammates Megan Pakulis and Petra Woods, who have both been named in the Ravens squad by coach Matt Barron.
Twelve of the 23 players selected represent Cardiff Demons, three of which – Frances Layton, Zoe Heeley and Sioned Young – are among the uncapped players in the squad, alongside Jade Mullen of London Broncos and Warrington’s Hollie Bussell, who scored five tries on her Wolves debut.
“We’re really excited for this challenge against Canada,” said Brindle.
“This is exactly the sort of fixture we need as we continue building towards the World Cup.
“We’ve named five players who could make their international debuts, and that’s a reflection of the strength that’s developing in the women’s game. Every one of them has earned this opportunity through consistently strong performances at club level, and they’ve pushed the experienced players all the way for selection.
“We know Canada will provide a tough, physical test, but our focus is on playing our game, continuing to improve the standards we’ve set and giving those new players the confidence to show what they can do in a Wales shirt.”
