SWINTON LIONS coach Anthony Murray says lifting the inaugural Centenary Cup has added to the club’s first win over a Salford side since 1985.
The Lions were 20-18 victors in Saturday’s derby which was moved from the CorpAcq Stadium to Wigan and formed a double-header with the host club’s Super League clash with Toulouse.
The Centenary Cup has been created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Salford being granted city status.
While Swinton currently play at Sale, their spiritual Station Road home was within the Salford city limits.
“Any silverware is welcome, and there isn’t that much of it to win, so we’re happy to have it,” said Murray.
The cup will be back up for grabs when the rivals next meet.
