NEWCASTLE THUNDER hooker Taylor Pemberton admits captaincy came with its challenges, but says it’s a role he relishes.
While leading more experienced teammates was a daunting prospect for the 23-year-old, he took the increased responsibility in his stride to help the Blaydon side compete strongly before being sidelined by a chest-muscle tear.
In his absence, Newcastle have continued to accrue wins, with 19 out of 22 games so far giving them a great chance of securing a top-two finish.
St Helens product and former York player Pemberton will be willing Graham Steadman’s side on from the sidelines when the play-offs come around.
Reflecting on his season, he said: “While I did it in my early days, it was the first time I’ve been captain of a senior team. With more senior lads in the team, the responsibility was a big ask at first.
“They may have played many more games, and you’ve got to tell them off. But I wouldn’t say I was nervous, more excited.
“It was something I just went with. I knew I could do the job, and I think I’ve taken on some confidence from it.”
