Tigers too strong for Rovers in final game of 2014

Castleford Tigers defeated Featherstone Rovers 18-0 this afternoon at the Mend-a-Hose in the final pre-season fixture of the holiday season and, in view of Warrington’s game against Widnes being postponed this afternoon, the final professional Rugby League game of 2014.

In a lively encounter with plenty of post-Christmas banter between the two sets of supporters, the Tigers went into half-time with a 6-0 lead thanks to a try from new signing Denny Solomona, who joined the club from London Broncos during the close-season. Former Featherstone halfback Liam Finn kicked the conversion.

Solomona was one of a trio of former London stars, alongside hooker Scott Moore and backrow forward Matt Cook, and it was Cook, voted the man of the match, who scored the second Castleford try early in the second half, with Finn again converting to double the lead.

Rovers competed strongly, but couldn’t get over the Castleford line, with another former Featherstone star Steve Crossley featuring strongly.

Near the end of the game the Tigers sealed victory with a fine try by Jordan Tansey, with Finn again goaling to establish an 18-point margin.
