Widnes Vikings enjoyed a surprisingly easy 4-46 victory today at Belle Vue against their hosts Wakefield Trinity Wildcats – a result that almost guarantees them Super League safety next season, while making the Wildcats the strong favourites for an appearance in the Million Pound game next month against either Leigh Centurions or Bradford Bulls.
The Vikings led all the way, with their hero being fullback Rhys Hanbury, who scored four sparkling tries, two in each half, while they also scored tries from Lloyd White, Aaron Heremaia, Kevin Brown and winger Paddy Flynn, who scored his 100th career try.
Danny Tickle kicked five conversions and Patrick Ah Van landed two.
Wakefield’s only reply was a second-half try to Lee Smith.
The Vikings, on eight points, now face home games against Salford and Leigh, while Wakefield, on four points, face a home game against Halifax and a trip to Sheffield Eagles in their remaining fixtures.
A full report and photos from this game will feature in Monday’s edition of League Express.
